The book tells the story of the towns of Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington and Tulbagh. These towns developed from lonely outposts of the Dutch East India Company in the shadow of the mighty ‘Mountains of Africa’ into thriving communities.

The remote but fertile valleys attracted adventurous settlers who tamed the seemingly indomitable area. The book reflects their life style, outlines architectural features, traces the growth of Afrikaans and education, shows how religion and politics influenced development, and in particular, what the arrival of the Huguenots meant to the growth of these communities which became the early centres of the wine industry – the oldest wine route in the country.

Das Buch spiegelt die Geschichte von Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington und Tulbagh wider, die sich größtenteils aus einsamen Viehposten der Holländischen Handelsgesellschaft im Schatten der Berge von Afrika in blühende Städte entwickelten.

Die fernen Täler lockten Abenteurer, Farmer und Geschäftsleute, die das Land urbar machten. Das Buch reflektiert ihren Lebensstil, gibt einen Überblick in die Entwicklung der Architektur, der Sprache Afrikaans und skizziert die Rolle, welche Politk und Religion in ihrem Leben gespielt haben. Besonders hervorgeboben wird die Rolle der Hugenotten und welchen Einfluss sie auf die Entfaltung der Städte ausübten, die im Laufe der Zeit zum Zentrum der Weinindustrie wurden, der ältesten Weinstraße am Kap.
