Wine Tourism News, May 2006
Ursula Stevens, yet again, has produced an extremely informative guide book. This
time to the Garden Route including the Overberg, Little Karoo and Route 62. The
A5, 256 page book covers the many different travel options available between Cape
Town and Port Elizabeth, along the national road and lesser known routes. Route
descriptions are accompanied by local histories, fauna and flora descriptions and
notes on activities(both physical and cultural) available in the area. Colour photographs
and illustrations accompany the text and the business index at the back comes in
very useful. Definitely add it to your travel list the next time you hit the road!
Garden Route travels is available at most book stores museum shops and internationally
in London and Athens.
Veld and Flora, Dec 2005
A comprehensive interesting and colourful description of the various roads you can
choose to travel along in this this area. Recommended for Tour Guides and holiday
makers alike. I don?t think one obscure by-way has been excluded. Full of interesting
little snippets it is particularly strong on the natural beauty and historical features
of the area. Great value

Snippets and titbits
Otter Trail
..Amongst all the walks in the Tsitsikamma National Park, the most popular is the
Otter Trail. You will need to obtain a permit from SA National Parks to complete
the full trail although part of the first day, known as the waterfall Route may
be walked without a permit. The trail covers about 45 km in 4 overnight stops and
demands experience, a clear head for heights and loads of energy. It ends at Nature's
Valley so make sure you have a 2nd car waiting for you. At each overnight stop there
are 2 hiking huts accommodating six people each with mattresses on bunk beds. Fireplaces
and wood are available as is a limited supply of water..
Great Trek
..Visit this interesting museum in Hartenbos to learn about the preparations for
the Great Trek, the Trek itself, the experiences of the trekkers and their living
conditions..
Jewish influence in Oudtshoorn
..Jewish influence in the town of Oudtshoorn South Africa, Ostrich capital of South
Africa can be seen in the CP Nel Museum. There is a functioning Synagogue inside
the museum itself. Many of the Jewish Families left Oudtshoorn by late 1913 when
the feather boom was nearing its end. The European markets were grossly overstocked
and feather sales slumped..
