The Cape of Good Hope - a journey of discovery is a lively description of the extraordinarily
beautiful peninsula from Cape Town along the Atlantic coast to the Cape of Good
Hope and back again via False Bay and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens to
the city. The book is packed with information on the historical, cultural, political
aspects, the flora and fauna at the Cape, Groot Constantia and Kirstenbosch, the
legends of Adamastor and the Flying Dutchman, San and Xhosa stories, the Portuguese
voyages and landing crosses, lighthouses, shipwrecks and disasters. The Cape of
Good Hope Nature Reserve is fully discovered by the detailed description of most
of the walks in the Park, along the east and west coasts and from Cape Point across
to the Cape of Good Hope.
It is a compact and easy to read travel guide, beautifully illustrated with colour
photos and sketches, to make you fall in love with the Cape.
Reviews
A Journey of Discovery - 1st Edition
Coleen van Staden, Peninsula Tourism - False Bay Echo, May 2000
WOW!..it certainly rates as one of the most comprehensive guides to the Peninsula
that we have seen for a long time. It is evident that great care and love have gone
into the production of this book and the illustrations and photographs capture the
natural beauty and some of its historical buildings?..the information is detailed
and covers everything from history and architecture to flora and fauna. I loved
the inclusion of the stories of Why the Dassie has no tail, Why the Ostrich is so
dumb and Van Hunks and the Devil.
A Journey of Discovery - 2nd Edition
Cape Odyssey November/December 2005
This wonderful handbook takes the traveler on an exquisite odyssey to the Cape of
Good Hope. ?En route? the traveler will initially explore the Atlantic coast from
the city via Sea Point, Clifton, Camps Bay to Llundudno and Hout Bay. As the journey
along the fascinating coastline unfolds one discovers the stones of the old Roggebaai,
Somerset hospital, Fort Wyngard, the Noon gun, Waterfront, shipwrecks and Time Ball
Tower, the strange geological contact in Sea Point, the early buses and trams, the
Botanical gardens of Bantry Bay and kramats on Signal Hill.
The route then progresses up Chapman?s Peak Drive that looks down on to the expansive
Long beach that reaches Kommetjie with its amazing steel lighthouse, the Rubbi Chapel
and more stories of shipwrecks before it finds its way via Scarborough to the wonders,
natural and legendary, of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The Nature Reserve
is explored by car and by foot- all hiking trails are fully described.
The return journey hugs the shores of False Bay, reaches quaint Simon?s Town, steeped
in history, where the traveler is welcomed by a Colony of Penguins and the famous
dog, ?Just Nuisance?. Then Fish Hoek is discovered. Kalk Bay with its lively fishing
harbour and feel of yesteryear main street, and finally Muizenberg is reached. Time
is spent to visit Rhodes cottage and to explore the amazing architecture along the
route., Tokai, the Constantia valley with its outstanding wines is visited, followed
by an exploration of the floral splendour of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.
Before reaching the city, one last excursion leads on to the slopes of Devil?s Peak
to visit Rhodes? Memorial, to enjoy the sweeping views of the sprawling city below,
and of course to ponder about the man who once held the destiny of the Cape in his
hands. Then it?s back to the city. On almost every page, accompanied by sketches
and photographs, the book paints the Cape Peninsula?s colourful history and culture,
highlights the natural splendour, and directs the visitor towards the many activities
offered along the way-boat rides, museum visits, penguins, seals, wine tasting,
camel rides, ostrich farming and hiking trails in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve
which have been included in the revised edition.
The book of 160 pages is in an A5 format with a soft cover. It is well illustrated
with maps and colour pictures. The publication is available from all leading book
stores, museum shops and selected tourism offices.
